JR Hildebrand, driving the race car in the back left side of this picture has just crashed his car within site of the finish line of this year’s Indianapolis 500!  He was a rookie this year and was about to win the race when he lost control.

Ironically, at the time Hildebrand was seven seconds ahead of, Dan Wheldon,  the second place car and had no need to hurry.  In fact he could have taken his foot of the gas and easily coasted across the finish line.  Instead he gunned around a slower car and lost control.

Wheldon in the orange and white  car on the right soon passed by to go ahead and win.  It’s Wheldon’s second Indy victory.   Hildebrand still had enough momentum to coast across the line in second place.

Loser Hildebrand stated, “There were some choice words going through my head fast and frequently. And they continued. It was my mistake and I have to deal with that.”

Winner Wheldon said, “Crazy things happen at Indy, and that is what makes it so special. It was just a huge relief for me to get the win.”
