I like this saying by Dick Costello, CEO of Twitter (that, ironically, I discovered on Facebook):

“You can’t plan the impact you’re going to have,

You often don’t recognize it when you’re having it.

The impact is what others frame for you

and the world after it happens.

You cannot draw any of your paths looking forward.

You have to figure out what you love to do,

what you have conviction about and

I like it because:

  1. It slows down fantasy expectations and false hopes ahead of time. “you can’t plan the impact”
  2. It gives us room to forgive our disappointments and broken dreams.  If we have “planned the impact” we can let those things go because they weren’t plan able anyway.
  3. It brings us back to some essential coaching questions:
    1. What do I love to do?
    2. Do I need to do it?
    3. Am I doing it?
