Don’t rock the boat!

If you believe you can stop the boat from rocking you may feel angry or guilty when it does, depending on who you blame—others or yourself.

Is there a third option? “Don’t rock the boat!” fosters a false expectation about the amount of things others or ourselves can control. We may believe that people have a lot more to do with rocking the boat than they really do.

The salty ol’ sailors suggest, “Get yer sea-legs, me hearties! Instead of trying to control the ocean control yourself and understand—the rocking is bigger than us. It’s as big as the ocean. Argh!”
